October Deadline for AFH Art Show

Gecko Magic

Gecko Magic by Terry

Want a way to show off what you have been creating over the summer? Well, here is your chance. October 1 is the deadline for the next Art For Homeschool Art Show. The show is going to be handled differently than the ones in the past. This time the show will give no awards. The purpose of the show is to provide a no pressure place to share your artwork and any comments you might want to make about the process. I guess you could call it a “show and tell”. Students may enter five pieces of artwork instead of the usual 2. This way homeschoolers and parents can show off several different types of media.

When all the entries come in, I will post a gallery of the work. Visitors to the site can make comments of encouragement to these student and parent artists as in the past. This time we will not vote on anything. There will be an awards show in April 2014. So put that on your calendar. The April show will give away $140.00 worth of gift certificates donated by our sponsor Dick Blick.

Not sure what type of art work can be entered? In the October show you can enter any type of media, two dimensional and three dimensional. Just take a picture, crop it so that there is no background showing and upload it to the Art For Homeschool Flickr group. Tag the art work in the following manner:

For students:

Art For Homeschool
Student Name
Age
Title
Medium

Parents tag their art work as follows:

Art For Homeschool Parent
Name
Title
Medium

I would like this art show to be a learning experience for all of us. So, when you upload your work to Flickr please take the time to make a comment about your art work. It would be nice to know what inspired you, why you chose the subject you did, what your purpose was, what you were trying to say, etc. You can even tell us what you learned or even if you had any problems with the supplies, or any technical information that might me helpful.

For instance, the art work at the top of this page is titled Gecko Magic. Gecko Magic is a painting that I did last spring. I created this piece by first painting an abstract painting with watercolor, splashing and throwing color down. Then I drew the geckos on the page. I then painted around the geckos to make the background darker. After the painting dried I drew on it with permanent markers in a sort of “doodle” type method. Creating this painting was more fun than work. I had a great time playing with it in the evenings after teaching all day. My purpose for this painting was to create something playful with cheerful colors. I was inspired by the geckos I had seen in Hawaii. Watching these little creatures scampering about always makes me smile.

This is just an example of what you can include with your work. It is certainly not necessary to say so much. A sentence or two is okay as well.

Art means so many things to different people. To me, it is always interesting to hear what the artist was thinking as they made their work. So, please share your thoughts with us in the new Art For Homeschool October Show.

I look forward to seeing your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Deadline October 1 at midnight CST.

Happy Summer! Plans for the Online Art Show….

Dancing Flower
Hi Everyone!

I guess you were wondering where I have been since I have not been writing lately for Art For Homeschool. I apologize for the silence, but sometimes you just need time to rejuvenate. My husband and I have been on vacation visiting family and friends and traveling about. I hope all of you are having a very happy summer as well!

I know some of you would like to know what my plans are for the online art show. I do plan to continue hosting a show, but it will be held twice a year instead of 4 times a year. There will be some other changes as well. Each show will be a little different. One show will be judged, the other will not.

I plan on having the shows in October and April. The October show will be just for display. The April show will be judged and awards will be given out to the different age groups. I hope that works for everyone.

If you are wondering about the photo at the top of the article, this is my solar powered dancing flower that I took on vacation with me. It sits on my dashboard and entertains me as we drive. More later……

Google Art Project

Starry Night

Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

Google has a great educational site called the Google Art Project. I think the website can be used to enrich your homeschool student’s art education.

So what can you do with this website?

1. You can view artwork from all over the world. The artwork is grouped by artist or collection. Artists and collections are listed alphabetically. You can search the works by keyword, medium, or whatever search criteria you want.

New collections are being added often. So, if your child has been studying Vincent Van Gogh, you can go to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum to the collection of his work there. Then with a few mouse clicks you can go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to see more of his work. How exciting!

As you look at the work you can also view details about the work and see when and where the work was created.

2. You can take a virtual walk through some museums and galleries just like street view on Google Maps. To see the galleries and museums that have this capability all you need to do is click on the yellow pegman at the top of the page. It will give you a list to choose from. At this writing there are 51 collections that can be viewed this way. You can even tour the White House and see the art and antiques there.

3. You can create your own collection of art. To do this you must sign in. Your collections are called My Galleries. As you view art work click on the Add to Gallery symbol to create your collection.

Creating art collections with your child could be a great way to use this website. Collections could be of their favorite work by a certain artist or a certain time period. Then you could ask your child to do a slide show presentation of the work, sort of a “Show and Tell.”

As your child presents the collection, they could explain what attracted them to the work, or what elements of art are in the work, or what emotions the work evokes. The presentation could have required criteria depending on the child’s age.

You might want the collections to have different themes such as works by women artists or art depicting events in the Bible. The choices for themes are only limited by your imagination. The collections that you create can be made public or kept private. Collections can also be deleted whenever you are finished with them.

FYI: There are some problems with the website. The Google Art Project has some bugs. These bugs do not surface every day. So, when you go on the website one day everything may work just fine and on other days not at all. I am hoping that Google is working on that. Plus, using the street view to go to various galleries does not work if using an Ipad. I was really bummed by that!

The Google Art Project is a site that I think will be beneficial to try. Let me know the types of projects you come up with using this website.

Vote For Doodle for Google Contest

I am still considering what to do about the future of the Art For Homeschool Art Show. I will make a decision later on this month. So please keep the emails and comments coming.

Earlier in the year I wrote about another online art contest. This contest is the Doodle For Google Contest. Students were asked to design a Google homepage logo for 2013. The theme is “My Best Day Ever.” The finalists work can be seen at this link.

Click on the Vote Now button and you can see the art work grouped by grades. You can vote once for each group. There are a little over 4 days left to vote.

Even if you don’t vote, the work is worth viewing. I also enjoyed reading the comments that the students made about their best day ever. Take a moment to go check it out. One of these kids is going to win a $30,000 scholarship!

Future of the Art For Homeschool Art Show

now what?

The May 1 deadline for the Art For Homeschool Art School has come and gone. There was a theme for the show. I knew that having a theme would cause the entry level to go down, but I had no idea that there would be no entries. Yes, no entries. Wow!

So, I am in contemplation mode. Why no entries? What happened? What did I do wrong? Did I do something wrong? What is the issue? Is their an issue? I am a thinker and I look at everything from a million angles. Maybe having four art shows a year is too much? Maybe the months I chose for the shows are at a really busy time? Maybe the awards are not enticing enough? Maybe this, maybe that….

I began this online art show to give homeschool students a place to show off their work and to try to create a little art community. I think it has been a good forum for the children. We have had some really wonderful work entered in the shows over the years.

Since I began teaching full time in public school I have not had the time to devote to the site that I would like. Sometimes I feel like that is a factor, but my subscription numbers for the website have continued to grow. So maybe an online art show isn’t something that is important to most people. Maybe the art lessons and art project ideas are more what you are looking for.

Maybe the art show should be an annual event? Just thinking.

If you have any ideas or suggestions or comments, you are welcome to leave them in the comment section or email me. I am open to all ideas. I appreciate all my subscribers and members. I appreciate all the people that have supported this website in one way or another. I look forward to receiving your feedback. The Art For Homeschool website will grow and evolve according to the needs of the homeschool community, parents, and students. Have a wonderfully blessed day.
